Modding Minecraft with Java – Level 1 – Fall 2017

This class will meet on Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00pm, September 26-December 19 (No class 10/31) for a total of 12 sessions. Kids can only be registered for the entire series, and should plan to attend all sessions, or watch the videos for any missed sessions to keep up with the rest of the class.

Learn how to code in Java, by making amazing mods in Minecraft. This class uses Code Kingdoms, which allows kids to code via drag and drop, until they feel more comfortable with the language, when they can switch to typing the code straight into the editor. Kids will use Code Kingdoms to create one of the following (we will vote to select one for the whole group):

  • High Noon Saloon, which is a PVP (arrow) shooter game
  • Blocky Races, which is a multiplayer racing game
  • Spartan School, which is a single player or PVP mob battle wave arena game (this is a favorite with previous sessions)

After completing the “Easy” mod, kids will move on to a slightly more advance mod, which they will select as a group from the following:

  • Spleef
  • Hungry Games
  • Lucky Blocks
  • Haunted Mansion

This class is for kids who are currently in grades 4-8. Kids don’t need any previous programming experience for this class.

Mod choices are subject to change! Please note that after taking this class, kids may continue to work through guided mod development lessons, and some of the more creative kids will be able to extend their knowledge to come up with their own custom mods. You may purchase a Code Kingdoms account to continue creating mods. It comes with a private server, so your kid can invite her or his friends to play those mods online.

For kids who have previously completed our Modding Minecraft camp or class, this will be way too easy for you, and we will add an advanced class if there’s enough interest. Please contact us if that’s you!

A note about the cost for this class: This might seem expensive, but when you consider that many in-person, instructor-led Java courses cost approximately $75/hour/person, or more, it’s downright cheap. We invite you to compare the cost of this class to other instructor-led Java classes in your area.

School is Out Mini-Camp – Fall 2017

Schools are closed for the day, and by popular demand, we will be open! We don’t have a set schedule of lessons for these mini-camps, and will choose activities based on the interests of the kids who attend. Some activities we have done in the past include:

  • Play Minecraft and other games on the computers and tablets
  • Enjoy a rousing game of Monopoly, Uno, Life, or one of the many other board and card games we have available
  • Experiment with STEM toys, like Snap Circuits, littleBits, Dash & Dot, and more
  • Watch music videos and have a dance party

This camp is appropriate for kids in grades K through 8.

Important: Camp is held from 9am-4pm each day. We will add before (8-9am, $10) and/or after (4-6pm, $20) care if we have enough requests for it, so please let us know in the order notes if you need it. Food is not provided at camps, so please make sure your child has lunch, snacks, and drinks for the day.
